Networking within one's own industry can often lead to career opportunities with a current employer or can offer leads on opportunities with other companies. One can become cognizant of available services that may offer future value or usefulness. Networking can offer great information and education and can also provide a warning of difficulties just on the horizon.

For networking to be effective and successful, one must keep in touch regularly with one's contacts. Sometimes, making an internet connection with these people is the most efficient strategy. Popular websites like Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn and even Twitter can be used very professionally. Granted this is a world away from the people who see them as nothing more than a popularity contest. However, they do offer a viable avenue to present one's self and keep others up to date without having to make a commitment to reach contacts on an individual basis each time.

The results of networking are sometimes unexpected. For instance, when I first got an internet connection at home, I volunteered some of my free time as a host in a parenting chat room. I enjoyed the people, we had a great deal of fun and it gave us all a ready network of other parents who could understand our daily issues and offer a sympathetic or empathetic shoulder. I worked really hard at my chat room hosting duties and took them seriously, even as a volunteer. Lo and behold, I was approached one day by a more senior host who complimented by skills and asked if I would be interested in using them in a paid position. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity. That networking, after a period of time, led to a whole new career - and it all started by offering up a little of my time in a place that I already enjoyed. Even on-line, one should consider every interpersonal connection to be valuable because we can never know where it may lead.
